Malaysians can now draw up their own designs and have customized bags, pouches etc made up at Garrison Packs. Garrison Packs is based in Selangor but their products and services have reached shores as far as Europe, New Zealand and neighboring Singapore. Using mostly mil-spec materials on their wares, Garrison Pack consists of people who are really passionate about their nylon carries. They carry in stock plenty of genuine Cordura fabrics, ITW components for military use (they even have Austrialpins) and gosh….the largest collection of Kifaru packs in Malaysia I have ever seen.
I finally got around meeting Malaysia knife maker Mr Faris Zulkifli of Fursan Blades. In my years of travelling around Malaysia and meeting knife/ parang makers, meeting up with Mr Faris is a refreshing ‘re-boot’ to say the least. A young Malay craftsman with all the passion, tenacity and persistence to realize his life long dream to become a knife maker.
A pack hoarder friend recently reminded me of a custom pack maker in Malaysia called Garrison Packs. I was bitching to him about getting a new pack after being made out as a prepper some weeks back (read here) and now…the idea of getting a custom pack made just for me is kinda seductive. Think about it. A pack that is built just the way you want it using the material you want. It will be a unique pack that no one else would have. I have a few design ideas in mind and I am really wanting this Garrison Packs to built it for me.
Over the years, I have discovered that there are plenty of Malaysian knife makers all over the country. Most knife and parang makers I have visited are very proud of their crafts to an extend that they dwell in their own cocoon of self pride and total ignorance. While they brandish their priced lacquered ‘kayu malam’ wood handle cutting tool made of Land Rover spring steel, they fail to realize that their produce are nothing more than a cottage industry that is worth a keep sake or at most a lower shelf display item. While they battle on the nicest wood handle and the best leaf spring for a knife, the rest of the knife making world on the other hand has moved on.
